Two-Piece Can Manufacturing Processes and Equipment:
Two-piece cans include Drawn and Ironed (DI) Cans and Drawn and Redrawn (DRD) Cans.
Drawn and Ironed (DI) Can:
Formed by stretching and thinning the material in a press using dies. The initial blank thickness is 0.3–0.4mm; after forming, the sidewall thickness is 0.1–0.14mm, while the base remains near the original thickness. Primarily used for beer and carbonated beverage packaging.
Process Flow:
- Raw Material (Sheet) → Lubrication → Blanking → Cupping & Drawing → Ironing (1–3 stages) → Trimming → Washing → Drying → Internal/External Spray Coating → Necking/Flanging (necking may be omitted for straight-wall cans) → Decoration/Printing.
Equipment:
- Sheet Feeder, Lubricator, Multi-function Press, Re-lubricator, Shear, Blank Stacker, Bodymaker.
Drawn and Redrawn (DRD) Can:
Also known as Draw-Redraw cans. Includes shallow-drawn (requiring 1-2 draws) and deep-drawn (requiring multiple redraws) cans. The number of redraws depends on material properties and can height. Subsequent processes are similar to DI cans. Shallow-drawn cans include round, oval, square, and other shaped cans; deep-drawn cans are typically round only. Materials: 0.2–0.3mm aluminum or tinplate.
Process Flow:
Raw Material (Sheet/Coil) → Wave Cutting → Lubrication → Blanking → Cupping → Redrawing (1 or more times) → Base Forming → Flange Trimming → Inspection.
Equipment:
Press with matching dies.
Three-Piece Can Manufacturing Processes and Equipment:
Three-piece can production lines include body, end, ring (for some types), and bottom production lines.
Can Body Production Line:
Process Flow:
Sheet Cutting → Feeding → Bending/Roll Forming → Lap Seam Positioning → Resistance Welding → Stripe Coating (Seam Repair) → Drying → Flanging → Beading → Double Seaming.
Equipment:
